A $100 Vanilla Visa gift card should not be valued like a $100 Steam, Apple or store card. It is an open-loop prepaid product with merchant, location and transaction restrictions. Those extra checks can produce a much lower resale rate even though the face value is still $100.
Current tracked Vanilla estimate
Latest USA Vanilla rate: 219.55₦ per dollar. Updated: 2026-08-13.
At the 2026-07-17 row of NGN 220 per dollar, a $100 card produced a table estimate of NGN 22,000. That low number is not a typo and should not be replaced with the general USD exchange rate. The tracked market applies a substantial discount to this prepaid product.
Why prepaid Visa risk differs from a store card
A retailer gift card has a narrow use case: it buys products from one brand. Vanilla Visa can be accepted by many merchants, but that flexibility comes with more payment controls, authorization holds and location checks. Buyers may also worry about prior transactions, pending holds, billing-address issues or a balance that changes after a check.
The result is a market rate shaped by process risk rather than only face value. A seller should expect the buyer to ask whether the card is physical or an eGift Card, whether it is activated and whether any transaction has been attempted.
Official Vanilla limits to understand
Vanilla’s official help center says its Visa eGift Card can be used only with merchants based in the United States and the District of Columbia. It also explains the official balance route and notes that some merchants may place a hold of up to 20 percent above the purchase amount.
Those rules matter to a buyer in a way they do not for a simple closed-loop gift card. A balance can be present while a specific transaction still fails because the merchant, location or authorization amount is not eligible.
Hotels, restaurants, salons and fuel purchases can be especially confusing because a merchant may authorize more than the final bill. A temporary hold reduces available spending until it is released. If a card has been tested in one of those settings, disclose it and wait for the official balance to settle before asking a buyer to price the full $100.
Do not expose card credentials during a quote
A Vanilla card contains payment credentials, expiration information and a security code. Treat them as financial details. Use only the official Vanilla balance channel, and do not send a full front-and-back image to several prospective buyers. For an initial quote, share the face value, format, purchase source and activation status with sensitive numbers covered.
If a buyer needs verification, agree on the process before revealing anything that could be used for an unauthorized transaction.
Activation should also be proven through the original retail process. A face-value label does not show that funds were loaded. Keep the activation receipt, and do not pay a third party who claims a separate fee is required to unlock or register the card.
How to compare a Vanilla offer
- Check that the rate is specifically for USA Vanilla Visa.
- Ask whether the buyer accepts physical cards, eGift Cards or both.
- Confirm whether pending holds or prior use disqualify the card.
- Compare the final payout with the USA Vanilla rate page.
- Do not compare it with a Steam or Apple rate simply because all three are denominated in USD.
What the $100 card is really worth
Its estimated naira value is the live Vanilla rate multiplied by $100, not $100 multiplied by the bank exchange rate. The final figure depends on a clean, unused and verifiable card that fits the buyer’s accepted format. The large discount is a feature of this market category and should be explained openly rather than hidden behind an unrealistic ‘dollar rate.’
